What is base rate?The base rate is the lowest rate at which banks can lend to anyone.According to the RBI instructions, starting July 1st 2010, all banks will have to publish their base rates and determine the effective rate of interest for loan facilities. Some banks allow existing borrowers to either continue with the current system of chargeable effective rate of interest (linked to Benchmark lending rate) till the loan falls due or renewal/review, or switch over to the base rate system even prior to the due date of renewal/review, in case they are inclined to do so.
